Whole days spent archiving, drawing, sorting, and again rearranging.

The hypnotic bad weather, which magnifies the sense of hearing.

The sun and the crisp air which awaken stores of energy…and you never get tired of doing.

Producing without getting gloomy, always loving what you do.

The good mood and a sense of peace during a sailing.

Rocking in a quiet bay.

The routine of a known port.

Anxiety about breakage which you try to repair with despair.

The disbelief that I’ve actually made it.

Pedaling to find a bit of land to see.

Cutting, coloring, dyeing, sewing, waxing, knotting.

The satisfaction of seeing our bags change boats.

Our floating laboratory? Our search for happiness.

My teacher, Rossella, really has colors in his head. A founding member of the association of natural dye ME Salice, founded in Milan in 1986 with the intention to continue the study and the work of the dyeing teacher Elda Maria Salice (1931-1985).

The color, that bright or dull, intense or faded, practically a state of mind, dye gives life to material.

There is no place which I visit that doesn’t tickle my fancy. I always wonder what they used to dye and if there is someone who still uses these techniques.

Jack fruit, pomegranate, madder, tea, henna, or Brazilian Redwood, it is always so enjoyable to perform such an artistic act, full of color and patience.

Rossella has certainly added a splash of color to our trip!

Hat, scarf and red socks, without which it wouldn’t be Des Pawson.

Des Pawson is one of the world’s leading authorities on knots and sailors’ ropework.

A passion for the knots he has cultivated from childhood.

Des is cofounder of IGKT, awarded by Queen Elizabeth for the research and dissemination of knots.

He lives in Ispwich, East Anglia, a lovely town with typical British order. Red brick house, small lawn and garden in the back.

Right here, in the fascinating quiet of his garden, Des has a small but specialized museum.

It is almost touching when he shows us a few inches of string dating back to 1545, belonging to the Mary Rose, or the first edition of “The Big Book of Knots ” with a dedication from the author, Ashley, to her personal hero.

In the days spent together we have seen and learned a lot and there is much left in my heart.

Before returning home we decide to visit a couple of places in London and Greenwich. The cold, and maybe the smoke from the coal fired home furnaces, sent flames in my throat and gave me a fever. We could not help but observe the comings and goings of Haredi from the window of Goldengreen pension.
